Warnings; alternate reality, L lives (for the moment) Light dies? (Probably), Shonen-ai,

…”It must have killed you”….his eyes landed on the tower, on the sky scrapers.
He looked down from so many feet up, neon’s, reds reflected in his eyes.
He shrugged once and pulled closer to himself, adding lumps of sugar to his tea.
     “It killed you once….”

The door clicked shut. He already checked the handle. Someone was here, had been here, was going to be here. Light sat by the computer at his desk. A tea cup, with a spoon and sugar. Silently he scowled to himself. Ryuzaki was being dicey again with his taunts.

Quietly, he picked up the cup and walked to his window. He watched the cup fall to the cement outside, shattering on the cold pavement.
Closing the window, he began to give a small smile to the spoon that still sat on the desk.
“It's reality, Ryuzaki”. He grabbed the notebook and sat on his bed.
He frowned slightly. He had tried to kill him once, and had almost succeeded. Rem had known his name, but he himself had made sure Rem was dead. “L” wouldn’t go after him without……..He paused, looking at the computer.
    “… collateral”

The tapping of the computer was a low constant drone. The sun had disappeared, and the light faded. Ryuzaki had been in his room, but he was supposed to be dead. He looked and found nothing, but why had he expected differently. Wherever he was, he was laying low. That was typical L.
“Hmm…where have you gone”, he glanced up as cold air wisped through his window causing papers to scatter. The reports would be on soon. He’d have to watch, tab the ones that he needed to take life from. Save some to send the police after, and punish publicly. He sighed. It was in his control, the police, the media, the criminals. Be side him he heard crunches as Ryuk swallowed an apple.
He went back to the window staring at the teacup fragments.
        “Where have you gone……?”

From the room, he looked out one of the glass walls. He watched him change and go into a half sleep, a mechanical like sleep. Like he didn’t want to but considered it necessary.
“You even started to fool me Light.” He tilted his head. “I’ll play your games through”,
“I’m faster”. (A grin) He hoped so; his next taunt would be more serious. But he would enjoy it anyways.
Walking over to the window, he used a remote to turn on Light’s TV. After a few seconds Light sat up-right angrily. He walked over and clicked it off. Passing the window, he spun around. He saw him, their eyes met. Ryuzaki smiled and waved, watching the color drain from his face. Then he turned and disappeared into the hotel, leaving Light to stand there.
“Time to go”, he chuckled and ran.

Huff, huff, Light ran down the alley, to the back of the hotel. The Notebook was in his back pocket, a knife was hidden on his person. He couldn’t let Ryuzaki ruin this reality that had come to pass. There was maybe a crime a week in all of Japan. Murder was unheard of, It was ideal.
He reached the back and stopped. He listened. Cold air nipped at his arms. He kept walking, away from the city, the people, to the sea. Ryuzaki was gone. He wasn’t fool enough to stay. Blasts of even colder air pulled his senses back as he emerged from the alleys. He stopped dead.
On the coldest day at night, sitting on a pier was Ryuzaki. He was far enough out on the dock he was trapped unless he dared swim. The seas grip was an icy death today however. Unconsciously he wanted to walk the other way. It wasn’t right. He drew a knife from his back pocket.
As he walked up the dock Ryuzaki didn’t even turn in recognition. He stopped.
“It shouldn’t be like this”, Ryuzaki said quietly.
Light turned his head to get a better look.
“A death of cold or a drowning won’t be linked to me you realize?”  He said simply. He didn’t know why he was alive, but it was a fixable problem.
“It shouldn’t have happened like this.” Ryuzaki said defiantly, finally looking from       the sea to Light.
“A world without death should not be able to be created with death, it’s not right.”
Lights interest finally snapped into play.
“Its perfect, it’s ideal”, Light spread out his arms to include the world around them.
“No...” Ryuzaki shifted against the wind,” an ideal world cannot exist, it can’t.”
He had spent a week waiting for this meeting. It hurt to see the world around him, so perfect after being made by so many deaths. It shouldn’t exist.
“What happened to you Light Yagami? What changed you to a killer?
Right now, he was hoping to get out alive.
“I’m no killer Ryuzaki.” He said it simply and straight.
“There must have been a time when you hesitated,” Ryuzaki countered.
Light paused. Hesitation? Hesitated? It didn’t matter but it was an interesting question. When would he have hesitated?
He became aware of Ryuzaki’s eyes staring at him. He looked back. He never let himself get attached, but if he opened the slightest bit he seemed to slip in. Perhaps it was because they thought on the same level.
“I don’t think I can answer your question”, he said thinking.
He didn’t want Ryuzaki here any longer; he was getting to close to places he would rather not go. Feelings woke up.
“Sorry Ryuzaki…” Light placed the blade against his throat, well his other hand slipped around the back. Shutting down, he pushed him over the edge and watched him fall ten feet before hitting the water. He hadn’t been able to bring himself to slit his throat. He sighed. The water would have to do his work for him. He sat down watching the ripples. He hadn’t fought at all.
            “Ryuzaki………”

Light woke up at home. Misha was still away.  He sat up, the little sleep he had gotten last night made him heavy. On his way out he locked the door, although there was little need. On a silent dawn, he went to work. He saw his father, the guys that worked the task force. They didn’t know about Ryuzaki. To them he was dead.
And to me as well, he reminded himself. Work past quickly enough with the criminals being so few. Nothing demanded immediate interest. He didn’t need to use the Death Note, mafias were already rooted out. What the task force could not do Kira took care of. Kira was a hero. Kira was a god.
As he sat in the bus home he looked out the glass. Earlier he had run into an acquaintance. Apparently, he was sulking. His father had said the same thing and asked about Misha.
“You’re a ride Ryuzaki”, he whispered. The last of the few things he still felt. Or almost felt, or did feel. The slightest feeling was odd now. He felt plenty of success, but little joy.
The last time you hesitated…Light considered that. Had the world he created not come out perfectly? Then he realized he had hesitated. He hadn’t been able to end Ryuzaki’s life with his own hands.

Someone sat down next to him.  He didn’t need to look, he knew who it was.
Munching, they leaned back relaxed and crossed their legs.
His stop came and passed. After a while, he looked up.
“I told you, I’m actually quite strong.” Ryuzaki continued eating a cake of some kind. His face was pale as it normally was. He tilted his head into what seemed an awkward position to look at him.
          “Hungry? “
“You shouldn’t be that strong”, Light murmured, “your too pale.”
Ryuzaki tilted his head to an even more impossible angle. “Pale?”
“Yes, pale”, Light said annoyed,” and you eat too much.”
Ryuzaki continued to look at him, with a slightly interested expression.
“If I didn’t know you, I’d say you weren’t happy, Light-kun.” Ryuzaki stated.
           Light gave him a smile.
“Actually, I’m debating choking you with that piece of cake.”
Ryuzaki gave him an innocent expression.
         “But I like the cake.”
Light stared at him, frowning at the amused feeling coming in.
         Ryuzaki stared back, unflinching.
         Light smiled slightly, berating himself.
“You sure you can eat with someone who tried to kill you in the past twenty-four       hours and still enjoy it?” Light asked.
Ryuzaki merely continued staring, before boredly eating the rest of his cake.
         “I’m enjoying this conversation Light-kun.”
Reaching over, he brushed some crumbs off Light.
“Actually, I enjoy most of our conversations.”
Alright”, Light said, cornered,” where we headed for dinner Ryuzaki?”

Light sat in his apartment, nibbling on some chips he’d bought at a store. When someone in the chair next to him silently took the chip he was about to eat out of his hands he looked up.
          “Ryuzaki”
Ryuzaki looked up after he finished the chip,” Yes?”
“Just take the bag”. Light held out one arm. Instead of taking it, Ryuzaki just took a handful. Unconsciously Light smirked.
“What is it?” Ryuzaki tilted his head to look at Light.
Light looked back. “You enjoy being contrary don’t you?”
A few seconds passed, then Ryuzaki swiftly took the bag from Light.
What am I doing?
Light thought silently. It was the eve of his world, and he was sitting enjoying dinner with L. Kira and L. Inwardly he could have laughed. He must have started smiling, because Ryuzaki was studying him again.
“It is a tad odd, isn’t it light-kun?” Ryuzaki said.
For a moment Light watched him warily, reminding himself to mask his thoughts, then he said carefully, “It is.”
           Ryuzaki looked thoughtful.
“More then a little perhaps.” He glanced Light over. Picking up a spoon, he bit on the handle.
“Hmmm…” While he continued nibbling the spoon, Light watched.
           “Ryuzaki?”
He glanced up, angling his head into an odd position. “Yes?”
Light regarded him seriously. “Why come back here? You want me to off you?”
A moment passed, before Ryuzaki sat back, relaxed.
           “I’m trying to understand Light.”
Light raised one eyebrow. “And you won’t take shots at me because?”
Somewhat tiredly, Ryuzaki spread out his arms to include the room.
“I was…..”He paused. “I was supposed to be the “good guy”. The one who makes peoples lives………”he thought,”….better”
Light continued looking at him intently.
           Ryuzaki looked even more fatigued.
“Killing people should not make the world…. Healthier or people happier…but...”
He gave Light a fleeting look before studying the ground.
“Light-kun, people aren’t afraid anymore...” He seemed off balance.
Light stared, almost off balance himself after seeing Ryuzaki... Unsure.  It was unsettling.  “Ryuzaki…”
He looked up, exhausted. “I won’t be taking any shots at you Light-kun. What you did was…cruel, evil even… but how it changed the world… It wasn’t immoral. “It seemed to take a lot of effort to say the words.
“Revolutions are often bloody Ryuzaki”, Light said.
Ryuzaki gave a quiet wry laugh. “Just be careful Light, I don’t think I can... take another one of your stunts...
Light considered. “I have no reason to harm you if your only here to watch.”
He looked over after a moment. “Ryuzaki?”
Though his head was facing away, he could see the slight rise and fall of his chest.
He was out. He could kill him now. He stood up and walked over. It could even be quick.
                He left the room.
After covering Ryuzaki with a blanket.

Light woke up early the next day. Even though he’d had little sleep he couldn’t stay in bed. After getting up he removed the blinds. Outside his window the rain poured.
It was loud enough he wondered how he had slept through it. He went back into the main room when he noticed someone asleep sitting up in a chair.
           Ryuzaki. Or Ryuga…or L.
He was still here. Light was slightly surprised. He was the kind or person that didn’t like to be caught vulnerable, and tended to vanish. Rarely had Light even seen him tired, or fatigued.
Glancing at the way he was sleeping while sitting on his feet, Light considered moving him. It was hard to tell he was sleeping until you looked at his head which rest lightly back. Sitting down still thinking he glimpsed his watch. Only seven in the morning, still dark because the clouds. He hadn’t bothered to turn on any lights, he like just listening to the heavy rain, pounding the roof.
Standing he walked over to the chair, and cautiously grabbed Ryuga. He wasn’t extraordinarily heavy, and he was in good shape so it was easy. Holding him, he walked over to the nearest couch and put him down slowly. Cold quickly rushed in to the places they had been touching. Kneeling he watched his sleeping face, then he gave a wry smile.
“Time for some revenge Ryuga, Don’t take it personally.” Light chuckled.

Light silently ate his breakfast. The clock on the wall ticked away. An almost silent tinking came from the other room. Inwardly, Light was laughing. He moved to the doorway and looked into the living room. A slightly dismayed Ryuga stared back at him from an awkward sitting position on the couch. Quietly Ryuga shook his hand, causing the handcuff to jingle. Light couldn’t prevent it. He laughed as a slightly irritated Ryuga went back to toying with the cuff that held his left wrist.
“Light-kun”, Ryuga said, slightly annoyed,” take it off please.”
Still laughing Light shook his head slightly. “Sorry Ryuzaki, I’m afraid I don’t have the key”
“Then how is this supposed to come off?” Ryuzaki said, his expression going from puzzled to amused, back to puzzled.
Smiling, Light sat down in front of the couch, within reach.  Momentarily Ryuga regarded him with curiosity, then gave the handcuff a final jerk. Shrugging he moved his interest back to Light.
            “Good morning Light-kun.”
Light watched him pull a heavy blanket tighter around his shoulders.
“It’s freezing”, he muttered.  Light tilted his head.
“Your always cold Ryuga”, Light said. “You slept well at least.”
“Yes.” Always such simple answers, Light thought. He watched Ryuzaki glance at the chair, then the couch, perplexed.
“You moved me Light-kun?” Light glanced up pulled from his thoughts. “Yes.”
Standing, he got on the couch and slowly twisted Ryuga’s left arm behind him, working at the cuff on his wrist. He felt Ryuzaki’s chest move up and down in rhythm beneath him. It made him sleepy. After a while he found the switch, and the cuff let go. Ryuzaki rubbed his wrist sorely.
“That was me repaying you Ryuzaki”, he glanced back.
Ryuzaki had already moved halfway across the room toward the kitchen.
“Light-kun?”  Light sat down and watched him.
“Ryuga?”  Not bothering to turn around, Ryuga continued.
“Next time you do that I’ll kiss you”, he said in a matter of fact way.
Light who had been sitting did half a double-take.
          “Ryuga?”
“Yes?” said Ryuzaki who had found something sweet in the cabinets.
“That’s not something you’re supposed to say calmly to a guy. Even if you’re teasing.”
Ryuga shrugged nonchalantly, before sitting on the other side of the couch.
“You almost sound uncomfortable Light.” He tilted his head to an odd angle to meet his eyes. Light viewed him carefully, not wanting to look off-guard.
“You’re boring me Ryuga.” He said.
          Ryuzaki considered him.
“…Very well Light-kun. Next time either of us is handcuffed and is near the other, the same applies.”
Light stared. “You’re not serious Ryuzaki?”
Ryuga looked up. “I thought I seemed serious to people?”
Light dryly looked back. “You and your games.”
Ryuzaki added cubes of sugar to a cup of tea he just made.                                 .
Without looking up he chuckled at Light. “It makes life interesting.”

Light watched Ryuzaki for the rest of the day. It was a small apartment so it wasn’t hard. Sometimes they would just sit there. It was too awkward to bring himself to sit next to Ryuzaki, but Ryuzaki had no problem sitting next to him. The rain pattered outside the windows. Near three in that night, Ryuga invited Light to go for a walk. From the look of things outside the windows, it would be drenching. He accepted.
“Light?” Ryuga asked, pausing in stride.
“What is it Ryuga?” He asked quietly. Ryuga glanced at him before continuing walking.
“You didn’t have to come.” Light slowed down momentarily.
“Ryuga?”     He looked up from his relaxed strides.
“Yes, Light-kun?’ He said it nonchalantly. He did most things that way.
“Perhaps instead of saying that you should thank me for coming”, Light said.
A moment of silence settled over them for a moment, as the rain dissipated from its deafening roar.
           “…Your right”, Ryuga said quietly.
The rain picked up a little again, and an almost thundering and rolling sound. It was almost difficult to see your hand. The street beneath his feet had switched to wood sometime when he had been distracted. He got less wet in the shower then how thoroughly soaked he was now. Then Ryuzaki stopped. It was then he realized where they were, because the rain died down briefly.
They were at the end of the pier. The pier that had been ten feet or so above the water had waves lapping the top.
“Ryuzaki……” He was unsure what to ask. Why here?
Ryuzaki went to look over the edge indifferently, as if the storm could bother him less. Unconsciously Light went behind him, stopping a few feet away.
He had never bothered to check Ryuzaki for anything on him. Why had he trusted him like that?  Silently he watched Ryuga glance down over the edge. Light went to sit on a pier. He had remembered to carry a weapon at least. Watching Ryuga though, he became conscious of the fact that at this point, he was not sure whether or not he could bring himself to shoot Ryuga.
Even if Ryuga was going to kill him.
He had no pretensions about that. Ryuga would not kill him, but if L thought he was doing harm to the world, he wouldn’t hesitate. L had no friends and allies lasted as necessary. Nothing hindered him.
“I’ve never seen waves so large Light”, he said quietly.
Light already knew where this was going. What goes around comes around I suppose, he thought quietly.
“Ryuga…..” Ryuzaki turned around. In the drenching rain his white shirt clung to his body. He raised a gun, and slowly leveled it with Light. Fleetingly after one also appeared in Lights hand. Ryuzaki’s eyes showed slight him to be slightly taken off guard, but nothing more.
“I was thinking we’d both die here...” He spoke casually, carefully.
“Your not one taken off guard Light…..”He spoke slowly. “You even had me trusting you, enough that this hurts.”
Light stared at him bitterly. “That feeling won’t last long I promise.”
“I suppose so…”Ryuzaki said, his eyes watching the gun trained on his form.
The waves around them were growing steadily larger, and they were a ways from the shore on a jetty.  Their sound hurt Light’s ears.
Ryuga began to pull the trigger, pausing briefly.
             “….Light…..or Kira..?”
“What is it” Light said after a moment. His eyes were locked on Ryuzaki.
“I’m feeling regretful”, he stated simply.
              So am I, Light thought.
A wave went towering over Ryuzaki, who was waiting for Light to kill him. Rather then take the chance of him disappearing, he aimed in the second he had and pulled the trigger. Then the wave came crashing down on him. He thought he heard something crack. Felt the waters weight, then something warm.

He woke up a while later to the sound of waves still crashing around him, but his body pulled safely out of the water. He realized he was lying on a large rock, probably somewhere on the Jetty, but much higher up then before. He moved his head; Blood covered the right side of his body.
But it wasn’t his blood. Light sat quietly beside him. Crimson liquid was pouring from a wound on his right shoulder.
“Light……”     Light stirred and opened his eyes. “Ryuga.”
Carefully he reached behind him and pulled out a gun. Ryuzaki thought to close his eyes, but found Light putting the weapon in his right hand.
“Where we left off”, Light said. Ryuga grasped the gun feeling rather weak.
He still had to kill him.
“Where’s yours?” Ryuzaki asked. Light pulled another one from behind him, balancing it in his hand. Ryuzaki put the gun to Light’s temple and waited for him to do the same.
Light looked up slowly into Ryuzaki’s eyes.
“Ryuga...”Carefully after a moment, he put the gun down in front of Ryuzaki, resting his head on one of his own knees. He studied him silently.
Ryuzaki tilted his head slightly. “What are you doing?’ He glanced cautiously at the gun that now lay beside him.
“You can kill me in a minuet”, Light said. Puzzled, Ryuzaki reluctantly put the gun down. Then he leaned back, and relaxed into what he normally sat like, seemingly stress free. He always had been peculiar like that.
Slowly Light leaned over him and slipped an arm around his back, using his free hand to hold his chin. He kissed him, deeply and slowly, watching his face become perplexed. After a minuet he started to pull back. Cold air rushed to the places they had been touching. He wasn’t content with it, but it was he was going to have to live he supposed. Or die, technically.
He released Ryuzaki’s back and chin slowly, then looked away uneasily.
He watched him, because he looked so unsettled too.
             When moments passed, Light spoke.
“Now’s a better time.” He heard the gun clink behind him and continued studying the sea. When nothing happened he turned around slightly to find Ryuzaki’s head inches from his own, studying him fixedly with a penetrating look. He was sitting on his feet again. They sat there for a while, before Ryuga pushed him down to the edge of the rock. Then he attempted to pull off Lights shirt and left after succeeding. Light lay there a few moments, noting his light headedness and tried to sit up. Faintness washed over him and he fell back down. Ryuga caught him before he hit the ground, and wrung salt water from his shirt into the wound. He thought he glimpsed something out of Ryuga’s face like pain.
“Hmm…Ryuga?’ Ryuzaki stopped, holding the shirt down tight where the bullet had entered.
“Stop that.” Light had meant for him to listen, but instead Ryuzaki gave him the same defiant look he’d given him when he knew he was about to die, the first time Light had killed him.
“Light-kun?” Ryuzaki said it in a manner that almost mocked, however in a precarious way.
“Why hurt me like this? Why not just kill me?” Light looked at him almost carefully, he answered after a moment.
He grabbed his chin, pulled it down to his own, and kissed him again.
“I’m in love with you.” He said it quickly as his world went black and he slipped under. But this time he felt someone trying to hold him there.
I think L's a ghost (or something) here, but I have no clue.
No flaming.
If you must critique be gentle.
